Adaptive Judo
Judo is a Sport For all, but we need your help to shape the future of our adaptive Judo opportunities and pathways.
What is Adaptive Judo?
Adaptive Judo is competitive or recreational Judo for people with disabilities. In many cases this runs in parallel with typical sporting activities however adaptations can be made, for example in VI Judo opponents start ‘gripped on’.
Different Types of Adaptive Judo
VI Judo and The Paralympics
Visually Impaired Judo is an adaptation of Judo for visually impaired competitors. It is also the only martial art in the Paralympics, being introduced for men in Seoul in 1988 and women in Athens in 2004. The rules are the same as non-disabled judo, with one exception. Visually impaired participants start competing gripped together, as opposed to the off-grip technique for non-disabled competition.
JudoScotland is committed to providing Judo opportunities for all and as such we are continually striving to improve pathways for participation.
